INTERVIEW BY STUART GOMEZ
What can you tell me about this HUF Am video that you’ve been filming for?
It’s pretty laidback, there have been some trips to New York, S.F., and L.A.—which are also the origins of Keith’s skating and the brand. That’s pretty cool. I live in New York so I was out here for that. I went to L.A. for a month and a half, and then I went up to S.F. with all of them.
What was your impression of S.F.?
I’ve been to S.F. before. I love that city! It’s so sick there; just a great skate city, you know? It’s super classic. It’s really cool being there, and I especially enjoy when the weather is overcast.
I’ve heard that you’re kind of a skate history buff.
Yeah, I definitely grew up nerding out on skate videos. [laughs]
When you went out to San Francisco, did you search out any really classic spots?
No, besides a couple of spots that I had in mind that I wanted to skate. S.F. isn’t that big, and has been getting skated for so long that anywhere you go you’ll run into something classic!
Is there any New York skate history that feels special to you?
That is a hard question to answer so I’m just going to leave it a little open-ended and say that 90s skating in N.Y. seemed the sickest.
Tell me which New York spot feels special to you these days.
Columbus Park has been like a skate plaza as of recently in N.Y. It’s always fun to skate there and you don’t get kicked out in an area where you get kicked out of most shit to skate. It’s easy to end up spending a lot of time there.
You got to play host when the HUF dudes came to New York, how was that? Had you met any of the dudes before?
Well, I’ve been a “flow kid” for a while. I’ve known Gottwig for a bit and Tyler [Cichy] too. Taking them around and stuff was cool; I had a couple of ideas for them. It’s tight to bring people around to spots that they could probably do something at.

Did you know that Jake hadn’t tried double kinks before?
I didn’t know that, but I knew that he was a fucking freak with rails! And that rail is really sick and very new; it’s been there for a year and a half. Not many people have really stepped up to it yet. My friend Andrew Wilson was the first, he boardslid it. Then Ishod 50-50ed it both ways.
I kinda went there on a hunch, and Jake just started fucking around with it and ended up getting that trick, which was really sick to see!
Are you familiar with The Jerky Boys? Have you heard of “Frank Rizzo”?
Yeah, The Jerky Boys are sick! I get that a lot. It’s cool, though, those dudes are funny as hell!
What can you tell me about Jake?
Jake is really sick in a lot of ways. You love him like a brother because he acts like one. You could hate him and also love him at the same time. He likes to get on your shit and annoy you like a brother would. He’s definitely pretty unique!
We only met a couple of months ago but we spent a lot of time together and he definitely pissed me off a bunch! And he got me fired up a bunch ‘cause he’s the shit!
What about Matt? Jake said that he’s known him for ten years and he feels like he still doesn’t know him at all.
Dude, I kinda feel the same way too. But that’s just Gottwig. I feel like he can always just surprise me, you know? The Matt Gottwig Instagram account goes! Everybody: you should go follow that. It’s @mattgottwig.
Do you check out @msflamboyant44?
I’ve seen the account. It’s a big conspiracy amongst the others. I can’t really wrap my head around what that Instagram is, though. It’s suspicious.
