Year’s Best Am 2014

02.02.15 – The Skateboard Mag

Joslin-Header-1

The year’s most anticipated video kicked off with an unanticipated jolt to the system. Joslin’s TRUE intro assaulted us, gave us goose bumps, and left us curled up in a fetal position, thinking, “The future is gonna be fucked up.” The Skateboard Mag’s Year’s Best Am has a film-every-damn-day mentality, ensuring that we’ll be blessed with plenty of eye-popping footy from this productive powerhouse next year—and shit will be even crazier once Chris gets that much-needed knee surgery. Check back all week for a ton of Joslin content. We’ll be replaying his Etnies part as well as a new Instagram edit tomorrow, his TRUE part will be playing for 24 hours on Wednesday, a new Plan B-Roll part featuring some of his TRUE leftovers on Thursday, and a brand new video part from Chris will be dropping on Friday. Congrats, Chris! You had a hell of a year.

YBAm 2013: Riley Hawk

01.31.15 – Brian Blakely

002-riley-yba-2013

On the heels of Riley Hawk’s insane year as an amateur in 2013, he rightfully turned pro the day of receiving The Skateboard Mag’s Year’s Best Am award. This rookie pro put in 365 days of work in 2013 and showed us all that he isn’t just Tony Hawk’s son, he’s a straight-up skateboarding machine. One who shows no sign of slowing down whatsoever. Monday, February 2nd, we’ll be announcing our 2014 YBAm! It was a hell of a year and there are a handful of candidates who deserve the award, but there will only be one Year’s Best Am… Check back Monday to see who it is! Read more

YBAm 2012: Mark Suciu

01.31.15 – Brian Blakely

002-suciu-yba-2012

It doesn’t take a genius to be good at skateboarding, but for someone trying to offer up a little more than some straight-up rail chomping and ledge dancing, a few extra IQ points to throw at the situation can only help you. 2012′s Year’s Best Am award was given to Mark Suciu and there was no denying that he deserved it that year. He did exactly what a hungry am should be doing while they’re on the come up—constantly film, constantly shoot photos, and most importantly… constantly skate. The YBAm award is the most prestigious award an amateur skateboarder can receive. This coming Monday we’ll be announcing our 2014 YBAm! There were a ton of heavy contenders in 2014… who’s gonna take it? Read more

YBAm 2011: Elijah Berle

01.31.15 – Brian Blakely

002-berle-yba-2011

He was only seventeen in 2011 when he won Year’s Best Am but you would’ve never known. Elijah Berle has been skating like a grown-ass man for years. His two-song part in Pretty Sweet definitely showed us he’s not the type to put out half-ass footage. He was above the masses in 2011 and walked away with the prestigious Year’s Best Am award with style and power. Our 2014 YBAm is going to be announced on Monday… it’s been a gnarly year. Which Am do you think killed it the hardest? Read more

YBAm 2010: Collin Provost

Collin Provost killed it in 2010. From jamming out two impressive video parts and receiving tons of coverage in all the mags, he was heads and shoulders above the rest that year. So it was no surprise that he won The Skateboard Mag’s Year’s Best Am. Like most of TSM’s YBAm’s, Collin went pro shortly after getting the award. This Monday we’ll be announcing our 2014 Year’s Best Am… Who’s it gonna be? Read more

01.30.15 – Brian Blakely

002-trapasso-yba-2008

A lot has changed for Nick Trapasso since winning The Skateboard Mag’s prestigious Year’s Best Am award back in 2008. Not only did Nick make his way into the professional rankings soon after, but he branched out and made his own company as well. Plenty of things change when you make the step from an amateur to a professional and Nick learned this first hand. Relive his interview from our March 2009 issue here. And don’t forget that our 2014 Year’s Best Am is going to be announced on Monday, February 2. Who do you guys have your money on? Read more

001malto-yba9857

Sean Malto had just turned 18 in 2007 when he was awarded the most prestigious award an amateur skateboarder can receive, The Skateboard Mag’s Year’s Best Am award. His YBAm interview and cover from our January 2008 issue were just a small serving of his accomplishments the previous year so it was a no-brainer to name him our Year’s Best Am. Our 2014 YBAm will be announced on Monday, February 2. Who do you think it’s gonna be? Read more

YBAm 2005: Johnny Layton

01.29.15 – The Skateboard Mag

TSM 21 Jonny Layton 80-91

Ten years ago, The Skateboard Mag proudly established the Year’s Best Am Award — and named its first recipient @johnny__layton — as a way to honor the hunger of amateur skateboarders, and as a prophetic nod to the next player in the ranks of pro rollerboarders that we hold in such high esteem. We chose Layton based on everything he’d done in the past year — covers, interviews, video parts, ads, contest results, and a New Jack feature in The Skateboard Mag. One mistake haunts us from the YBAm issue that inaugural year, though: we fucked up the cover caption. So as a way to honor the past while making up for our past indiscretions, we’re delighted as ever to present to you with the first: 2004′s Year’s Best Am: Johnny Layton. Read more
