Hate to rub it in, but...
it's by chance that I live in Encinitas, California. My Dad's family moved to California in the 1930s from Oklahoma during the Great Depression. My great-grandparents along with 8 other relatives(my dad was 4 years old) loaded up two cars and made the trek to Bakersfield. It was full-on "Grapes of Wrath" (John Steinbeck), when there were signs at the Caly border with "OKIES GO HOME!" greeting them and migrants were beaten up by the locals. Half the family ended up settling in North County San Diego, Fallbrook to be exact. Fallbrook is known as "The Avocado Capital of the World" and was the home of the Fallbrook Ramp back in the late 80s.
My Mom's family came here in the early 1950s via the Marine Corps. My grandfather was a colonel, served in the Battle for Guadalcanal in the Pacific Theater during World War 2 and ended up at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base. Mom attended school at Fallbrook High along with the other military brats and that's where she met Dad.
I didn't make the choice on moving to SoCal like so many people do, it was made for me and I am quite pleased with my parents' decision to stay.
I shot this photo of John "JTMR" Reeves was shot down the street from my house at Swamis in Encinitas.
