Lets Go Make A Dolly: Part II
Here are some test clips that I shot with the dolly I made this weekend. Take it easy!
It definitely needs some adjustments, but all in all, it worked pretty well. Especially since I was limited on tools and space.

After some preliminary sketches, I headed to home depot to figure it out.

I brought Melcher, my favorite kleptomaniac to see if he could cut down on some costs.

The aluminum section seemed to be the most promising.
After some heavy brainstorming, we decided to go with an erectors set, type of build.
Good looks from Bones! They were cool enough to sponsor our rig.

Melcher's new puppy, Party, was there to supervise.

There was drilling galore!

We had to really scrounge up a bunch of washers and spacers to get the wheels tightened up nicely.
We were sure to put lock washers on every bolt, to hold it together tightly.
It ended up turning out much better than he had imagined.

The platform ended up being pretty light. But the next step will be to get a lighter tripod.
Melch found these huge poles, which worked pretty good. but we'll have to get some smaller and lighter ones that are much more portable.

What's the advantages of using a dolly over a filmer board. Just smoother or do you need it to be repeatable? Could you post a vid where you compare a dolly shot with an "on board" shot? I'd like to see the differences.
As for your dolly, I think angle iron may be your best track material. It's inherently stable(it doesn't roll on it's own). It's stackable so it takes up less room. You can tack on some all-thread to the inside and use that to link the pieces together with flat bar. I guess you couldn't have it bent easily for curved track, but nothing is perfect.

dolly shots being a trend tristan? how about just strapping on a fisheye and shooting everything with that? that's a trend! one that has nearly ruined skate films. it's so lazy. whilst practical for follow shots and for making your weak gap look big (like makeup for an old actress). long lens shots are a good thing, and smooth shots are a good thing. bring on the dolly shots and even the steadicam.
danonzone, check out the indislider. it ain't diy, but it has the advantage of being placed on TOP of a tripod, thus making levelling much easier.
